Continuous Labor Support & The Sacred Hours In Postpartum
- 12 hr12 hours
- Location 1
I meet patient at their predetermined birth site, provide counter-pressure massage, relaxation and guided imagery, suggestions for and assistance with labor positions and how to use labor support tools such as a birth ball to maximize labor management, hot/cold packs, hydro and aroma therapy to alleviate nausea and vomiting. I also hold-space to ensure mother and her birth give informed consent to any or, all hospital’s (birth site) labor & delivery procedures, if it is required. I ensure birth plan is honored as much as feasibly possible without risk to fetus or patient. My physical Doula support will continue whether patient chooses to use pain medications or have a natural labor. I will stay with patient (and birth partner) for up to two hours after birth to give emotional, physical and informational support as well as to support initiation of breastfeeding. I will also ensure patient’s “Sacred Hour” immediate postpartum maternal & new born care is honored as much as feasible without medical contradiction, to ensure patient and birth partner receive their hospital meal. Additionally I conduct a two-week postpartum, two-hour session where I provide patient centered and driven Information and support including: obtaining feedback on birth experience, addressing issues of maternal-infant bonding or breastfeeding, postpartum mommy recovery and self-care IE: Perineum care, Cesarean recovery self-care. Sleep deprivation, baby soothing techniques and referral to related infant-maternal postpartum resources.
